Will my kittens run away if I let them free?

I have two adorable kittens that are five months old. I was keeping them in the house, but my mother decided to put them outside in a large dog cage because my female kitten kept soiling the carpets in our house. I want to let them out of the cage, but I am afraid that they will run away. I’m also afraid that they may come in contact with a rabid animal.
I’m in college, and unfortunately, I have a lot of expenses, plus I haven’t started working on my new job yet. Therefore, I don’t have any money to give them their shots..yet. I plan to give them their shots some time this month though.

So will my kittens run away by me keeping them in the cage? Will they wonder off and never come back? I’m praying that they don’t run away. They are a great joy to me.

****By the way, I do let them come in the house occasionally and play. I have a special room for them to go in everytime they come in. Sometimes I just let them roam around the house or they spend the night. But most of the time, they are in the cage****

I would appreciate sound advise and no rude comments. A person is quick to judge a person’s situation and never walked in his/her shoes.

Yes, they come back. ILet them out. Even if they get into a fight with the neighbor cat it’s a better life than living in a cage. They’ll be fine. They’re cats.

Cats can’t live in cages. And don’t let them out of the house. Rehome the one that is soiling, and keep the others inside.

Ba idea first of all she (or they) are kittens so larger cats will be looking to fight wait till at least 1 year old. Second make them free meaning put them in your room litter train them keep them indoors until they have had shots. If they are kept in a cage they will be mad.. show lots of love to them.

Well, i have 3 kitties, so I understand your love for them! I used to have a cat, and he ran away, was gone for 5 days, and found his way home!! I had another cat do a similar thing, came home 3 days later!! However, they were both 10+ years old. They did have all their shots, and even though they were indoor cats, they still had down the basic instincts to protect themselves.

I think that you shouldn’t let them out, they are still so tiny and helpless compared to older cats! Plus, getting them their shots would do them a world of good, plus put you at ease. You could always leave them in the room. There’s this great stuff called Nature’s Miracle and it completely gets rid of cat urine and vomit stains. I use it on everything in the house, even if it’s not caused by the cat. And you could always change their cat litter or the box to make it more appealing to them.

I understand your frustration, I’m only 22 and am recently married so when something comes up with the cats, it’s a huge stress!! But you will make the right choice, just go with what you’re instincts tell you!!

Many cats are different, if they are well-loved, they usually won’t go too far. Especially if they love their food. The kitten may run, or she may stay. As for the rabid animal, if your kittens have gotten their rabies shots, they SHOULD be fine.

it’s hard to tell since all cat’s are different. i had a cat that i kept inside for around 5 months and when i let her free she just stayed around the house, but my kitten that’s always been allowed outside wanders everywhere.

First of all, why is the female cat soiling in the house? Is she in heat, is her litter box changed at least daily? Does she have a bladder infection? You obviously want to care for the cats, but keeping them caged outside is really not a healthy situation for them and they will be under socialized. This is not helping to train them with whatever problems you are having with them and it will only make it worse. If the cats are 5 months old and haven’t had their shots then it sounds like you wouldn’t have them spayed/neutered either. This is a recipe for all sorts of behavioral issues. I know you love the cats and want to be able to take care of them, but maybe it would be best for the cats if you could find them a home with someone who has the time and resources to get them to a vet, socialize and play with them and give them a home. If all you do is keep them in a cage outside, and they are not socialized or bonded with the family, then it’s likely they will run away or be stolen or picked up. I really encourage you to find a local clinic who will spay/neuter your cats for cheap, vaccinate them, and have them microchipped. Most areas have programs who will do this and it may stop your female cat from going in the house. If the behavior continues with the cat then you need to figure out the source of the problem. Cats prefer to use a litter box unless it’s not being cleaned, and are naturally very clean animals. If she’s not going in the litter box there is some reason why and you need to take the time to figure this out rather than caging them.
