I noticed there is a growing number of people using pictures of kittens as their avatars on here, especially the atheist and agnostic members. Why the sudden change?

Because they don’t B**** and want attention all the time. We’re looking at YOU, theists. A dog will blindly, yet loyally, follow his master off of a cliff. A cat will assess the situation and think for itself. Basically, cats are the animal versions of atheists.

The number has in fact decreased over the years. Maybe they like to have a bit of fun, there used to be loads of them.

If you’d been here a while, you’d already know.
There is often a rush of questions here asking "why are atheists here? They don’t belong in the religion or spirituality section!! They should go someplace else!!!". Some witty atheist (I honestly can’t remember who was the first), answered, "Do you have to be a cat to be in the cat section?"
After that, kittehs (a super-cute adaptation of kittens) became a symbol for some atheists here of both the cleverness of that answer, and of the ignorance of the believers who continue to ask the same question over and over and over and over and over and…well, I think you get the idea.
All in good fun, but not new by any means — it’s been years.

Cats are independent (until you take out the food can) and are not owned by anyone. They relish in their ability to ignore you, and make you come to their terms.
And besides, they are the dominate Intelligent Life Form, charged with training the apes how to walk up right, since they are crippled by those opposing thumbs on their front feet.
