I just went to go weigh the kittens and i noticed one of the kittens end of her tail is missing. should i bandage it or do anything to it. I am unable to take her to the vet right now. I rescued the cat and her kittens for a friends neighbor who couldnt keep them and there was a good chance the mom would have been put down. i didnt see any blood and didnt find the tail. The kitten is still eating. Here are some pictures. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hmm, I think the kitten is missing its tail because of your neighbor.. Like, Your neighbor must’ve did something to the kitten’s tail.. Or, The kitten must’ve got into something to hurt its tail.. Either way, I’m sure it’s not your fault.. Why don’t you go ask your neightbor what happened to the kitten’s tail?
& You should also take the kitten to get a tail check-up at the vet when you have time too..
& Im happy that you took that kitten in! :]
From the looks of the pictures you posted, and especially since there isn’t any active bleeding or signs of infection, my best guess would be that portion of the tail was dead at birth due to some anoxic event where the circulation was cut off. Think of it like a baby’s umbilical cord falling off. It doesn’t look like there’s any immediate danger to the kitten, especially if he isn’t meowing and crying like he’s in pain. You just have a unique kitten!
I’m not an expert so please don’t quote me on anything, but it doesn’t look serious.
If it’s not bloody or anything, it could just be a birth defect. Get it in to a vet ASAP. To see what’s up.
Are you sure this kitten had a full length tail before? If not it is possilbe she is a natural bobtail which not at all uncommon. If she had a full length tail before and their is not blood or sign of injury it is possible an injury caused the end of the tail to die and fall off and it could have possible been eaten by the mother after it fell off if you did not find.
If their is no injury or raw wound there is not need to bandage the tail
My two year old kitten was born without half of her tail and she is fine
Cats will occasionally get their tails caught in something – like a door, and amputate the end of the tail. From the look of the picture you posted the injury doesn’t look to be real fresh. There would be a raw sore. I can’t tell if the bone is exposed – if it is then you need stitches to protect the end.
We have a young cat that had to have her tail removed about 2 inches from her rump. The surgery was a couple of months ago and she is doing fine without the tail. However, it was stitched and she was receiving antibiotics to control possible infection.
Odds are that it’s just a deformed tail – a very common birth defect in cats that are inbred.
Why did you take on the responsibility of this mother cat and her kittens if you can’t afford to care for them? You really should call a local no-kill shelter and surrender them there so they can get checked out, their shots and spayed and neutered once they’re eight weeks in age.
If there are no signs of infection such as redness, swelling, bleeding, oozing, pus, etc. and if the kitten doesn’t respond when you touch it like it’s painful it’s fine. The kitten eating and drinking is a good sign. Tale bandages are HARD to keep on and unless there is any of the above signs present, it should be fine. Keep watch for any of the above signs closely. If there is an open wound present, try to gently clean it with diluted betadine/iodine or at last hydrogen peroxide. Use triple antibiotic ointment and continue to clean the area gently. Don’t over use peroxide. Just use mild soap and water. Clean around twice daily and keep using the ointment. If the signs of an infection begin, the vet is where the kitten needs to go.
