Newborn kittens will generally nurse every two to four hours and sleep the rest of the time, while older kittens will sleep a little less and be more active. Discover why sleeping is important for kittens to gain energy and digest food with information from a veterinarian in this free video on kitten care. Expert: Dr. James Talbott Bio: Dr. James R. I just can’t bear seeing strays, it breaks my heart so bad. She’s mixed with a calico, Persian and maybe Siamese.
Anyways, she’s pregnant. And very far along. She is very skinny, which I know can mean the babies aren’t alive. I’ve brought her in, washed her with flea and tick soap, fed her and left her out food and water. She’s made herself a spot to deliver in my laundry room lined with some clean towels I put there. Brought her in at noon today, and at about 7 pm she started bleeding (thick dark red). I felt her belly gently, and it seems she may be having small contractions.
I think she is choosing to have the kittens NOW because she knows she is safe. Weird how nature works! I need to know info about experiences strays, and pregnant cats… like now that she’s bled how far along should I expect stronger contractions and the kittens?

Yes I knew about dawn soap, but since she had so many fleas it was necessary to use it. We actually didn’t realize that she was pregnant till we saw her wet and how big her belly was!
I’ve already called the vet and let her know about it. It can be really expensive to bring animal IN to the vet to have the kittens, so since I think she is alright (now anyways) we are planning to let her have them here.
The blood that came out was thick, but only a small amount. She did have some dried on her , so she may have bled more than I noticed. She IS in a trance, just laying in that same spot. Breathing sort of heavy, stomach seems to be contracting but not heavily. My gut instinct tells me she will within 48 hours by her actions (she’s made herself a nest). I will call the vet though if something is wrong, also my neighbor has breed cats her whole life.
Do understand that she is a stray and I didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars with vet bills, so please don’t recommend "BRING HER TO THE VET". She isn’t in any emergency. I have two dogs of my own to pay for. I brought her in to make sure she is safe & delivers her kittens in a safe place and possibly rescue and keep her as my own pet. If there is an –emergency– I will take action to a vet.
