He’s gone from 16 lbs to just 12 lbs, probably because he’s lost most of his teeth, plus I’ve caught him outside throwing up once or twice. But otherwise he is very healthy and spry, still hunts, sometimes plays like a kitten with yarn. He’s a farm cat that we brought home 13 years ago, He’s neutered. our problem is that he continually wakes me or my husband up at night, sometimes 3 or 4 times every night. it’s getting so bad, we’ve talked about putting him down. My husband is up very early for work. Last night I missed out on about 2 hours sleep, after the cat woke me up and couldn’t get back to sleep. so, and this is getting to be a big problem. we’ve tried leaving his dish of food outside so he’ll just stay out. we’ve tried chasing him around in the evening and not letting him sleep so much. But seriously, he’s like an old man. In and out, he’s never really used a litter box, wants fed, goes back out. (you get the picture) His nights are like his days now. naps, sleeps, gets up moves around a bit, then i see him sleeping someplace else, either outside or inside. Help, any suggestions would be welcome. This is getting to be such an issue, we’ve even discussed putting him down, but otherwise, he’s very spry and doing well –what do we do!??
There is NO ignoring him at night. If he’s outside, he stands on his back legs and rakes his front claws down the patio door. (it’s like listening to someone rake their nails down a chalkboard, try ignoring that in the middle of the night). If he’s in, he makes the awfulest meowling sounds. I can’t imagine locking him in the garage (or another room) and listening to him howl like that all night long.
Jen, That’s what I’m trying to avoid–putting down a good cat! but I think giving him away isn’t the answer either. At his age, I think that would be just as inhuman and turn his world upside down.
Maddie, good point on the senior cat food idea. I’ve started buying some senior food (Friskies? I think) and haven’t seen him outside throwing up lately.
