CFA stands for Cat Fancier’s Association which is an organization that provides tips about all cat-related matters, stands up for cat’s rights and holds the world’s largest registry of pedigree breeds. By registering your kitten through CFA you gain instant credibility in cat shows, and most shows will have it as a requirement that your cat be registered in order to enter.

To get a CFA kitten, you need to buy through a CFA approved dealer who will give you a blue slip with your kitten. This blue slip will contain four sections, A, B, C and D which need to filled out to register your kitten. Section A details the naming of your kitten which, for the serious cat enthusiast, is not as easy as choosing a cute name. The registered name must be 35 characters or less, but has to include both a name for your cat to be called by on a regular basis (the ‘call name’; this is the ‘cute’ name for your kitten) and a surname to show who’s kitten it is. You should use the syntax ‘call name of surname’ to correctly fill in the name box. The rest of the form is very simple as sections B and D should have already been filled out by the breeder and section C is merely your name and address.

Another thing to consider when registering your kitten is breeding rights. If you want the kitten’s eventual litters to be registered under the CFA you have to ensure you have breeding rights to do so. This means that there will be a pin in a red box on the blue form. If you don’t have this, you don’t have breeding rights. This is something you must check with the breeder because it is their responsibility to supply the pin to you.
