Balinese Kittens: The Most Intelligent Siamese Breed

Balinese Cat

Balinese Cat

Balinese kittens are an oriental breed of kitten that have been known to exist in the western world since the 1920s and a variation of Siamese kittens except with slightly longer hair. They appeared because some litters of Siamese kittens contained the odd kitten with slightly longer hair due to a genetic mutation, and these were eventually bred to give rise to the Balinese breed.

The main way to tell the difference between a Siamese and Balinese breed is to consider the length of their fur. Balinese kittens have slightly longer fur, but only in a single layer – most kittens with longer fur have this in two layers making the fur appear rougher. However, the fur isn’t so long that it makes grooming difficult as is the case in some long-haired cats.

Purebred Balinese kittens should have bright, sapphire blue eyes that strike you as being amazing from the moment you look into them and dark color spots in certain areas which are generally agreed to be their ears, feet and tail. In different variations of the breed these will be different colors, such as the silver-blue color spots of the Lilac Point Balinese kitten.

In terms of personality, Balinese kittens are considered by far the most intelligent variation of the Siamese breed, yet one of the least ‘talkative’. This means they are less likely to mew all the time, give you some peace and quiet should you want it However, when they do open their ‘mouths’ they produce a lovely soft sound that is much more gentle on the ear than other cat breeds and they will only make this noise when they have something important to ‘say’. The breed also has a fairly high life span which is set at 18 to 21 human years in age.

Like all cats, the Balinese can be a challenge to train.  I recommend an invaluable resource called ‘Cat Training Secrets,’  which will shave off hours of frustrated time in trying to do it yourself.  Things like:

  • How to get your cat to use the litter tray right from the beginning (and how these power techniques are different to your solution to correcting changes in litter box behavior).
  • Find out the crucial elements, that if missing, guarantees your cat will continue to spray all over your house.
  • and much, much more.
