Okay, so I have been searching for a kitten for so long.
Finally, yesterday, i saw an ad for a calico kitten. I called the person, and they emailed me pictures of this adorable kitten& just like that I knew that she was the one. So, today, my brother decided to take me [it was a one hour drive there & an hour drive back.] We get there, and the first thing I noticed was that there was a Chow Chow tied up outside, 3 cats roaming around hissing at each other, and the place was kind of messy. I guess that should have been a warning sign. I rang the door bell, and the lady that I had talked to came to the door [2 more dogs came out] holding three, from first glance, adorable kittens. I took the calico one from her and I was disgusted. The poor things eye was swollen shut, with gunk all around it. I almost started crying. She was also fairly skinny, too. I wanted to ask the girl "um.. Hello? do you not realize your cat can’t even open its eye & its probably infected?" I was so mad that she did not tell me that over the phone, because I made my brother waste gas money. On top of that, I am pretty sure she showed me fake pictures of the kitten, because the pictures that she sent me were of a calico kitten without eye problems& the two kittens didn’t look alike. I didn’t look at her brothers& sisters, so i am not sure how they were.
We left in a rush, but now I am debating whether or not to go back and get the poor thing & take it to the vet. I’m only 13, and I do have about dollars, but would this be even enough?. I dont want to ask my parents because money is tight right now, but my birthday is coming up soon, and I usually get about 300 dollars, so do you think she could wait until my dad gets his next pay check, or my birthday comes up [which could be from today until august 5th?]
I feel cruel for not taking her. I keep thinking in the back of my head, what are they going to do with her if no one wants her?[they had a litter of 11, and she was 1 of the last 3] I feel so guilty. I dont think I will be able to sleep tonight because I will be thinking about it all night.
Any advice would be appreciated.
To the person that is giving everyone a thumbs down: PLEASE STOP!. It is getting very annoying, and it isnt nessecary
Thanks:].
I talked the situation over with my Mom. This is what we decided to do;
although we decided that there is nothing we can do, because we already have one cat, and we dont want him getting sick or our dogs from a new kitten, we are going to send an email to the owner. Actually, i already sent it. I asked them if they knew something was wrong with there kittens eye?. I also told them, that if they got the cat proper veterinary care, I would be more than willing to take her:].
I’m sad, but I know that I am doing the best thing. I have also talked to my mom about calling the local animal rescue and talking to them about the situation and see if they could come give it a look. Maybe i was just over exaggerating. Thanks to everyone for the good advice!. It was really hard to make up my mind about what to do, but keeping her isn’t a very good idea when we might not have the money to take her to the vet.

The sad fact is that when you buy a kitten from an awful person like this, you are just encouraging her to breed more and take the same terrible care of them. The kitten probably has a herpes infection in her eyes, and in a kitten that can be terribly expensive to treat. I foster for our rescue, and we just spent over $100 treating a severe herpes infection in one of my fosters – and that was only because the vet is very rescue-friendly and didn’t charge us for her time – that was the drugs alone. The kitten probably also has fleas and worms, and an upper respiratory infection – it’s going to be very expensive for you, to be perfectly honest. Plus I am sure the kitten has no vaccines at all. I understand how you feel, really I do – but please don’t go back.
For your $75 you can go to your local shelter and adopt a healthy kitten from them. You may need to wait until you find a calico, but they are pretty common and one will be there soon. A shelter kitten will have some vaccines, will have been wormed, flea treated, and probably spayed. You will still be saving a life, as this time of year there are many more kittens out there than homes for them/
I’m glad you have a good heart for animals, but we need to use our heads as well as our hearts. Like I said, purchasing this kitten will cost you a fortune in vet bills, and will just encourage this horrible person to keep breeding more. Adopt from a shelter – you will save very much money, and will be saving a life in the process!
that is horrible!!!!!! u shud totaly go back and get it soon b4 it dies or gets worse and TAKE IT 2 THE VET ASAP!!!!!!!!!! if u do get it give it xtra care and luv!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It probably has cat flu (rhinotracheitis or calici virus). The chances are they all do. It is rarely fatal nowadays. It cannot be directly treated. A vet will give her a shot of antibiotics to prevent secondary infection while her immune system is compromised.
okay well i would recommend you go back and get her. She could die from staying there. And at least if u take her to the vet that may help. it will be also a big help to the kitten.
Don’t wait, this poor kitten needs medical attention ASAP. If you can’t get the kitten yourself, do you know anyone else who can? Other family members or friends who would be able to help?
omg! I would first call the ASPCA or the Humane Society right away and tell them what you saw so they can investigate the issue.
I definitely think you should go back and get the kitten. Not only will you be saving life, but when she gets healthy you will feel so proud and good about it. I think 75$ is enough. In fact, I think it’s way too much considering the condition of the animal.
If you have the space for it, and if you can work it out with the woman, i would take all three, get them healthy, and them sell them or give them to good homes. I’m sure you parents would agree to the idea if you explained it, and just let them know it’s until the other two get healthy and then you’ll find them good homes. You may need to report her after you get the kittens though, because I don’t know if you will be allowed to interfere in an investigation by taking some of the animals once it starts.
Good Luck! Tell if you make any progress or something changes. Don’t be afraid to be firm with the woman, and tell her no one is going to pay over 20 bucks for those sick cats, so you negotiate a price for either the one cat or all.
You need to report this woman to animal control now. All her animals must be sick and she is denying them vet care. That is animal cruelty. She’ll probably get charged. Please save these animals!
Oh my goodness. That lady sounds like a hoarder and sounds like her animals never see a vet. If I was in you shoes and it was my old Calico cat, Magic I’d go back and get her. I saved Magic from an animal shelter when I was 11 or 12. Now I’m 16 and still would do the same thing I did back then. So yeah go back and get her! Love her, care for her, and take her to the vet to help with the infection. I bet you’ll give her this awesome home and get her out of her bad home!
Best of luck and go get her!
That’s up to you. I had someone throw a sick kitten in my yard and I took her to our local vet. It cost $15 for medication and she was as good as new, but it also could have cost a fortune. You are just taking a chance. I admire you for wanting to help a sick animal.
heres wat u need to do and dont do some of this and not all because its all MANDATORY. number one: go back and get the cat. 2: tell ur brother ull pay 4 the gas. 3: give that woman crap and tell her what a horrible thing shes done. 4: get that cat OUT of there. 5: CALL ASPCA. these are horrible conditions. these animals need out of there. 6: take that cat 2 the vet ASAP!!!
if money is tight for you, and this kitten is sick are you sure you’re going to be able to care for this kitten any better, you may love it more but I mean what if it has costly health problems. Look at the guy at savethem.ca
I tell you what I would do, and what one of my friends did when she encountered an obviously irresponsible owner–she took the animal and said, I don’t owe you anything for this (pet) and you should be reported. She walked away with the pet and kept it for years. People like that won’t stop you when you are in the right. Now, barring that, I would negotiate with her, too. Give me the cat and I won’t report you to Animal Control. Then you can take steps to get kitty well again.
I would call animal control on those people they will come and rescue the sick animals and take them and get them well again, if you buy the kitten you are giving her money to keep this horrible thing going.
