My eight week old kitten is coming home tomorrow, but she got spayed today, I have a few questions…?

We adopted an eight week old calico kitten yesterday, we waited ALL day long until we were allowed to call and see if we could pick her up today (she had to get spayed but they didn’t know if she would get in today). They told us that the vet was just finishing up her whole litter (she was getting micro-chipped too) but he didn’t feel comfortable releasing her today because she was still under anesthesia. I wanted to cry, I miss my little girl.

I have a few questions:
* Will she still be sore tomorrow morning if she got spayed today? (it was around 2:30/3:00pm)
* Is she going to have to wear a cone on her head?
* Is it okay to pick her up?

Bonus Question: I named her Kenna, which means beautiful..and I see her as beautiful, do you like it?

Here is kiiiiind of what she looks like, i think she’s cuter then these but i don’t have any pictures of her yet: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/09/23/kitty1.jpg

I understand about missing your little "baby."

    1. The area and the muscles will be sore for a few days. She may not be as active and "bouncy" and may not jump up/down as much. Just let her rest as MUCH as she WANTS to.

    2. Generally, no cone is needed. Some cats lick the wound, some don’t (my last one did not). Just keep an eye on the stitches (they use the "dissolving" stitches, but it takes a couple weeks for them to dissolve). If the area becomes reddened and "pussy" in the next couple of days, take her back to the vet, as the area is likely infected.

    3. Pick her up today? That’s up to the vet when he/she will release the cat.

Kenna is a beautiful name, indeed, and she will "grow into" it quite nicely, I’m sure!

Oh, and be sure she stays warm the next day or so…. that is, don’t keep her in a cold room or outdoors in the cold. Anesthesia can wreck havoc with a cat’s body temperature regulation, and she will be much happier if she’s inside, resting in a nice, dry, WARM area.

    Me… kittyslave23… I know my place.

ask your vet all this questions when you pick her up.

your vet will answer ALL of these questions and give you instructions for taking care of her. A few things to keep in mind is yes, she will be sore, maybe even sleepy but it won’t take her long to start ignoring the pain. Give any pain meds your vet prescribes as labeled, even if she seems ok. Because she will be ignoring the pain soon, she’ll be frisky and zooming around the house in no time! Don’t let her rough house too much though becuase you don’t want her to aggitate the surgery site.

    She sure is cute!

Picking her up will be ok, as long as you are very gentle, and support her by her back legs, not holding her around her tummy when you lift.

be sure to just follow your vets advice and call them with any follow up questions you might have.

GOOD FOR YOU HAVING HER SPAYED !!!! thank God there are some responsible pet owners in this world !!!!

she will be a little sore, but they heal quickly, the vet will tell you to keep her activity down to a min. which is very hard, they tell you this to avoid the incision being disturbed, the good news is cats heal quickly and usually without any complications. you will want to watch for any red areas or hardening bumps along the incision line.

she probably won’t have to wear the victorian collar, i’ve had countless fosters spayed and have never had to use it, just make sure she isn’t licking her stitches excessively.

yes you can pick her up, enjoy her and best of luck, love her name by the way..

Do not pick her up until the stitches are taken out/dissolved. She will probably have to wear a cone on her head, but she may not have to. I’ve had vets put on a cone afterwards, but I’ve had vets not put a cone on afterwards, it really depends on the vet. Try to keep it peaceful when you’re around her for a few days, do not chase or try to force her to play, she is going to be very sore.

I had my little kitten spayed
so i know what u r going through. She is going to be sore and she will still be drugged up so remeber she will be clumsy and she might have to wear a cone. My cat needed to wear a cone b.c of her obsession with sucking her nipples.Eww haha… And no do not pick her up she will have stitches on her stomack so that is a NO NO.

    peace n luv

We have had many females spayed. I was worried the first cat we had done but it was absolutely fine. I kept in a cage in our living room for a couple of hours while the anesthesia wore off. You will have to watch that she doesn’t try to bite at stitches but ours never did.I thought the vet would give pain medicine to give at home but he said the cat could injure herself by jumping around and running up steps if they didn’t feel anything. Ours acted like nothing was wrong just lazier than normal. I was worried she would be meowing in pain but that never happened. I think it is more traumatic for the pet owner then the pet. She will be fine.Mine never wore a cone.
I didn’t pick her up and carry her around until I saw she was okay.

she’ll only need to wear the cone if she licks the incision and don’t grab her lower belly

Try not to worry – the vet was being cautious in keeping her overnight, since they did the surgery so late in the day. Kittens that age recover with amazing speed – she’ll be ready to play when you pick her up, and certainly by the end of the day. You’ll have trouble keeping her quiet! She probably won’t come home with a cone, they try not to put them on such little kittens. And yes, please do pick her up and hold her. Just do it carefully, with your hands under her back end and feet rather than under her belly. The stitches will come out in in like 10 days, the fur will grow back – and you never have to worry about her coming into heat, getting pregnant, or all of that.

Her name is very pretty, i’m sure it suites her very well.

no cone, she will be sore for a few days, try not to pick her up for the first few days after that its okay if you are very careful, don’t let her jump ( easier said than done) because you don’t want her to pop her stitches.your vet will give you instructions and answer all your questions when you go to pick her up.pay close attention to what they tell you and don’t be afraid to ask questions.she won’t feel like playing or anything for about three or four days so don’t be alarmed and she will have to go back in 2 weeks to have the stitches removed which is no big issue and she can come right home that day with you.. Love the name it’s original.
