Some homemade or household items my kitten loves:

Ribbon: She likes this better than string because she can sink her claws into it.
Crumpled paper/foil: They love batting these around. He may tear the paper apart and spread the pieces everywhere; my kitten does. If you try a ball of foil, make sure there aren't any sharp edges sticking out.
Box fort: Cut the flaps off of a box and then cut an opening into it, then turn it upside down. Kittens love to play inside and on top of boxes. He'll also like to have a safe place to hide after the move.
Soda box tunnel: If you use the long, skinny "fridge packs" of soda, open up the ends of one and let him crawl through it.
Laser pointer: Lots of cats love to chase laser pointers.
Sock "prey": My kitten loves to pretend that she's dragging prey around, so a long sock is perfect for her "prey dragging" instincts.

She also loves ping pong balls, corks, sponges, and just about anything else she can bat around or carry in her mouth. Try out a bunch of random items and see what he likes. Of course, he'll probably find a bunch of things on his own once he gets used to the new place. :)

Some simple ideas I've found that work for my cat,
Get an old sock, and just tie a knot in the centre, they'll play with that for a while. :)
Or, you can buy a few bouncy balls, place one in the bathtub, your kitty will go crazy as it moves around the sides of the tub.

If you have string then that's easy.. just don't let him eat it!
or maybe if you have an old shirt that you no longer wear cut it into long string like sections and hold them all in your hand and shake it infront of him :)

my kitten liked crumbled up paper, especially when I first got her and didnt have anything. Even now when she has tons of toys tonight she was running around with a crumpled up paper.
She also loves those feathery things on a stick, also these shiny colorful strips attached to the wand.
i put a command hook over the doorway tied a shoe lace and her favorite toy to it and she liked batting that around (used feathery thingy, toy mouse or whatever)
I may have more ideas but thats easy stuff u can do with stuff around the house u might have. Alot of the toys u buy in the store look easy to make.
She loves the canvas grocery bags too just cut the handles off of one so she dont strangle herself

Don't overwhelm kitty too much antoher first toy was a bandana I got at pirate dinner show I dragged that around she chased it a bit then I tied it to her first store bought toy (a small octopus) she still likes it.

oh yeah toilet paper rollls are handy too. U can tape them together in a pyramid shape. I would put kitty treat in one spot so she can fish it out.

The funniest toy I ever "made" for a kitten was to take a paper bag, like you'd get at a grocery store, and make a small hole at the bottom of the bag. Make it slightly smaller than the kittens head. Then just lay the bag in the middle of the room, laying on its side. The kitten will find her way into the bag to examine the hole. They love squeezing into small areas. Also, you can use anything that is long, like a fly swatter or something, and tie strings with small objects hanging from them. Then sit on the couch and shake the stick and let the objects thrash a little. they love that. Cats/kittens love stalking stuff, so set the kitten up. Lay on the couch with your hand dangling over the edge, and slightly move your fingers, the kitten wont be able to help herself, and she'll start batting at your fingers. One more suggestion, lay a blanket/towel on the floor, and put your hand underneath the middle of it, and slowly more your fingers. When the kitten runs over to investigate, stop moving. Let the kitten get closer, then when she sticks her face close enough, move a little again! Its hilarious!

My cats favorite toys were a tin foil ball and a piece of string... How simple is that. She also loved hair bobbles but they got banned when she started to swallow them. x
