I have several questions about kitties…Can someone help me?

As you already know, I have just adopted my adorable kitty cat "Gorgeous" this past Saturday. Well, after a few days I have some ?’s, so I was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to answer them…
1. Why does my kitty meow constantly whenever I put her in the carrier? (She was adopted from PetSmart, she was transfered there from the ASPCA Shelter and transfered to the ASPCA Shelter from the Palm Springs City Shelter)
2. Why does it get worse when we get in the car?
3. Will this be a constant issue for as long as I have her? If not, how can I remedy it?
4. She’s really picky with her food. Any suggestions as to what I could give her as a treat? (I have tried pineapple juice, soy milk, tuna treats & pepperoni without good results)
5. Is soy milk bad for kitties?
6. Has anyone trained their kitties to be on a least? If so, how did you do it?
7. What are some fun things to do outside of home for kitty & how do I prevent her from running away?
Thank you guys SO MUCH in advance! =^..^=

1 & 2 & 3. She is probably lonely, scared, or ticked off because she’s confined; my cats don’t like their carrier either, and it gets worse in the car. She may also be associating the carrier and the car ride with more traumtic trips. Give it time and don’t just take her for trips to the vet.

    4. Please don’t give her people food!! People food is not meant for cats and may make her sick. Get kitty treats for her! There are lots of brands and flavors out there- she’s sure to like several, just experiment. Mine like the friskies brand.

    5. Soy milk? I don’t know for sure, but most cats are lactose intolerant in any event. And soy milk is people food, so it’s probably best to avoid it.

    6. My kitten had a leash & harness for the first few trips outside. Starting early enough, it’s definately possible to get a kitty adapted to a leash. Patience is the key, and treats.

    7. You can prevent her from running away by giving her lots of love and affection, yummy food and treats, fun toys to play with and maybe a sibling. :) But since kitties sometimes get lost, you might want to consider a microchip for her (from your vet). They are fairly inexpensive and will help bring her home again should she get lost.

Congrats again on your kitty, I saw your post earlier this week and she’s a beauty! Check out http://www.kittencare.com , too- it has lots of great information.

All 3 of my kitties cry in the carrier and car. I don’t think there is anything you can do about it. They vocalize because they are stressed out. Some even pant like a dog.
As far as treats go.. I would stay away from any milk and offer cat treats such as Pounce or Aquariums. If the cat doesn’t like those, you can offer a tablespoon of soft food every few days. Mine love that. Too often may make him or her more finicky or cause vomitting and diahrrea.
As far as leashes go….good luck. The only one I was able to train started when she was 4 months old. i would stay with indoor interactive things like toys on a wand and such. Keep kitty indoors without a taste of outdoor freedom and she or he will hopefully not even be curious. Hope this helps!!

Have fun with Gorgeous. But, she should NOT go outside..the average lifespan of a kitten let ot is six months. She meows when in the carrier because she doesn’t like it (don’t know any cat who does), the car is even worse. If taking on a long trip I’d talk to a vet about tranquilizer. Give her the food you intend to keep giving her…good brand cat food (?Max Cat I give mine)…she’ll eat it when she gets hungry enough. Don’t worry about treats until she’s eating food well. Don’t know about soy milk. I know how much fun it sounds to have her outside on a leash, but, if she really likes it, she’ll be crying all the time to go out…you’ll go nuts! Ha d a cat who’d only come in to eat after she found out how much fu the outdoors is.

i can only answer a few:
The Carrier: she probily has some bad memeries how she was treated.
Carrier In Car: maybe when she was being shipped from ASPCA to the other the cage fell?
Food: give her chicken- stuff that cats would eat in the wild.
Kitty on Leash:ive never tried that but with my bunny. first u have to get her used to wearing it. like put it on for maybe 30 mins a day then each day make the time longer.

Your gonna do stuff that you really can’t do with a cat. 1. First off my cat/s always meow cry out in a carrier.
    2. It may be something like they feel insecure in the carrier or maybe your gettin rid of them.
    3. It may or may not be an issue for ever. Some cat/s are comfortable in a carrier. BUT Again why would you have it in a carrier that often?
    4. You can feed your cat so many different types of cat food. Dry is by far the easiest. But you can go with a canned food too. PINEAPPLE juice. ARE you alright. Soy MILK, PEPPERoni Stay away from the above listed. Do not give your cat any dairy products. It may be OK on occession, BUT not regularly. (This is on the dairy products) Like milk.
    5. Milk products over all are not good for cats. It’ll give them the runs. Unless you want to be running after them to pick up wet Sh*t I wouldn’t give them any.
    6. I guess you could but a cat is gonna be a little bit different than a dog.
    7. LOL, Your too much already. I don’t think your gonna get to do anything like this with a cat. They ARE HUNTERS. They will go after bird, mice leaves. Get the picture yet?
I think you should get a puppy. You can get a smaller dog like a poddle, or a pug, or a chiuajua (spelling?)There are so so many different smaller dogs. And you can do EXACTLY with them what you are talking about doing with your cat. I mean keep the cat but it is a dog you want for what your talking about. SORRY

1). Cat’s in general don’t like to be in a defensless position, such as "trapped" in a carrier. They become afraid and stressed. This is not a good thing for any pet, but especially cats because it affects their health. Try not to bring her all over the place with you like you see people do with their little dogs. That is just not in the nature of cats. They are very territorial and don’t like to visit other places if they aren’t going to get there on their own two feet.
2). Pretty much the same as answer number 1. Also, the motion freaks them out. Cats are all about their sense of balance, and the movement of the car makes them feel helpless.
3). Yes, it will. They just don’t like to travel.
4). I highly reccomend IAM’s cat food. Cats have a very sensitive (surprisingly, since you see homeless ones eating out of dumpsters) digestive system. Give her a good, healthful dry food every day. I would even skip on the wet food. For treats (and don’t give too many..try one or two a day) you just have to do a process of elimination for her.
5). I’m sorry, I don’t know the answer about the soy milk.I can tell you that my cat vomits when she has even a little cow milk. I would stick with water..fresh water every day. Cats dehydrate VERY easily.
6). My neighbor lets ther cat go outside on a very long leash and hang out in the yard for hours that way. The leash is attached to a post. If you try something like this, be VERY careful. Keep an eye on her at all times. She could strangle herself is she gets tangled up. Also, make sure she has immediate access to an area of safety in case there is a preditor in the area. I would just avoid the whole leash idea all together. I don’t think you will have much success trying to get her to "go for a walk" with you. Cats are just to independent for that.
7). My cats have always been indoor cats because I live in a very rural area where there are many large natural enemys to cats. I would just die if anything ever happened to her, so she stays in. If you plan on letting your cat go out, make sure she has a tag with your telephone number on it. There are all ready way too many poor stray cats in the world.

I really hope this helps. Just remember, cats like to do their own thing. Thwy are not like dogs and she may not conform to what you want her to do. Just give her a good home, healthy food, lots of love, and I am sure you will have a happy life together.

Good for you, by the way, fo getting a shelter animal!!!!!!
