My kitten had this little patch of red, and suddenly it grew very large. It’s circular in shape and about the size of a quarter. At first it didn’t seem to bother him but now he is scratching at it and licking it. Of course we are going to take him to go see a vet, but I’m too impatient to wait to know what it is because I’m very worried.

Please, PLEASE if you have any idea what it could be please let me know.

could possibly be ringworm. (a severe case) looks like it has become inflamed from the kitty scratching and licking on it. do you have a petroleum product like aquaphor to cover it with until you can get to the vet? poor thing, looks like it is really uncomfortable. best of luck
there is a parasite that cats can breath in and it turns into a warm that eventually eats its way out :S its very gross and looks VERY painful. It could also be a horrible infection that started from a small scratch or an allergic reaction to a flea bit or mites. I really hope she gets better, poor baby.
It’s not ringworm or an abscess, it looks like a wound of some sort. Ask your vet about tumors. The surface isn’t like anything I’ve seen on the strays around here.

This may be an infection of the skin. This may have been a result of a insect bite, sting or something that has injected a venom. Looks like this has burst…keep it clean, and of all things, do not allow flies to land on it…the flies will infect it that will turn into maggots.
Hello…I foster cats and kitten, and take in homeless ones too….so I have been there and done that….first…..has it lost the hair in this area….if so it could be ringworm….which isn’t a worm at all….but a skin condition VERY contagious to people and other pets…..make sure you wash your hands with a germicidal soap and hot water for at least 5 minutes…….and take it immediately to a vet ….use gloves to handle it if you have them…..if it hasn’t lost the hair….it could be a "hot spot"….bathe it in medicated shampoo….and get a hot spot spray….(walmart…or your vet)…..if it doesn’t stop then…it could be an allergic reaction to shampoo on your carpet….or fleas….or just dry skin…..there are too many variables to actually cover them all here….but this should give you an idea of what to expect…..hope this helps….rhajha
I don’t know what it is, but your vet should be able to help you out. My cat had a similar problem; it turned out to be an abscess or a wound that burst and became infected. It looked horrible (and was on her throat), but lots of attention, antibiotics, and peroxide sprays healed it right up. If you have to clean your kitty’s wound several times a day (I did), try to associate the experience with something good that she likes, like being scratched or given treats. It makes cleaning a lot easier. Your kitty will hopefully be okay. It’s scary, but your vet will have good advice.
This looks like an abscess that has popped. It is bet to see a vet because the infection from an abscess can travel throughout the body and more will pop up. The vet will clean it out and give an antibiotic. Tonight you can clean it with Peroxide and then apply Neosporin. Neither of the meds will hurt your cat. Good luck.
I know how you must feel and I’m sorry but only an experienced vet will probably let you know for sure.as you can see we are all just guessing my guess it looks like a tumor that he aggravated by all the licking probably because it was hurting him or just in the way.
It doesn’t look like ringworm – I’m guessing (??) that it could be a bot fly larvae – often called a worble. They are little worms that burrow into the skin, then burst out when they are mature leaving a large nasty looking hole like that. If that is what it is, they’ll treat the wound, give you antibiotics, and do some major worming treatment. It’s grusome, but easily treated.
