Does this kitten count as a tuxedo cat?

I’m about to adopt a kitten that looks almost exactly like this. Does he count as a Tuxedo cat or is he just considered a Domestic Shorthair? He’s very white with black spots whereas most of the kittens that show up on Google when I image search "tuxedo kitten" are mostly black with small patches of white, but I read on Animal Planet that white cats with black spots are called Tuxedo cats (or Magpie cats if they have long hair).

Here’s another picture of kind of what he looks like (only the kitten I’ll be getting has a little less black)

Could I name him Tux or Bond or Gent? (All tuxedo inspired names)
OH! And I forgot to mention! Just like the second picture, he has a shortened tail. Two other kittens from that litter had shortened tails (one like his and the other one nearly a bob). Will his tail grow longer as he get older or does he just have a cute mini-tail?

Well first off, Tuxedo isn’t a breed. It’s a coat pattern where a cat is mostly black with white on its chest resembling a tuxedo. And it’s not even an "official" coat pattern it’s just a casual term. Cats that are black and white are called "Bicolor".

So no – that first kitten does not a "Tuxedo" coat. Since the body is white with only black on the tail and a chevron of black on the head it would be called "Van Patterned" – a coat pattern most often seen in the breed Turkish Van.

The second one would simply be a "Bicolor".

Be careful with kittens with short, missing or twisted tails. This is usually the result of inbreeding which can cause all sorts of other genetic defects. And no – the coat won’t grow into a regular length tail.

And both kittens pictured are "domestics" – kittens of no particular breed.

This kind of cat is not a particular breed of cat-the term "Tuxedo" cat simply indicates that tux pattern on their coat. These dapper black and white cats are much loved by some cat owners for the cats’ suave appearance and friendly personality.

A tuxedo cat is simply a black and white domestic short hair.

Both are cute BICOLOR domestic shorthair kittens. There is no such thing as a "tuxedo" color cat. Its a term given to black and white BICOLOR cats that have white on the face, chest and legs. Its an incorrect term to use for a bicolor cat.

Cat associations and reputable breeders never use the tuxedo term – its a bicolor cat (for the coat pattern). Doesn’t matter if its more black then white or vice versa. However, if the color is restricted to the head and tail and maybe one or two small body spots – that is properly called a VAN patterned bicolor. The first kitten would be a van bicolor, the second kitten a bicolor.

First of, super cute kitty! You’re so lucky! :)

Generally I would say a "tuxedo cat" would be black with a little white (think like a humans-tux). However…. now days they are making white tuxes for guys too- so your kitty is just like one of those! :) Who’s to say he isn’t?
Besides even if he doesn’t look like a stereotypical tuxedo-cat, you could still call him tux or gent! Those are cute names!

Have lots of fun with your new kitty and give him a hug from me- those kitties in those pictures look so sweet! :)

A tuxedo cat is primarily black with white on it’s chest/belly and possibly white on their muzzle and paws….. the kittens in the pictures are simply white and black cats….. domestic short-hairs… but so cute!

There is no breed called "Tuxedo".
It’s just a slang term for black and white bicolor domestic short hair.

He will probably always have the shortened tail.
