Cornish Rex Kittens are unusual domestic kittens as they have no real fur on their bodies; they only have the bare essential amount of fur, known as ‘down fur’ to protect them from micro-organisms and is incredibly soft, even velvet-like, to touch. They originally developed after a litter of barn cats were born in Cornwall, United Kingdom, in the 1950s, and one of them had a unique genetic mutation resulting in shorter hair. Breeders have now realized the potential of this unique breed and Cornish Rex Kittens are available from a variety of different stores across the country and range in color from the ‘traditional’ white, black and brown up to blue, lilac and tortoiseshell!

Because of the Cornish Rex Kitten’s coats, it has been rumored that people with cat allergies are still able to own one of these kittens. Whilst this is the case, it is not 100 percent foolproof so you are still advised to hold the kitten in your hand before purchasing it to see if you really are not allergic to it.

Cornish Rex kittens must be kept indoors otherwise they will get cold quickly because of their lack of long fur. Even inside they have been known to hang around slightly warm objects such as computer monitors or light bulbs just to heat them up a little!

The breed often gets referred to as the cat equivalent of greyhounds because of their sleek looks and the speed, and adventure, of their step. They are known to play fetch and race other pets, much like dogs do, and have been known to perform great aerobatic shows for their owners. Curiously, their adventurous nature takes them to exploring the insides of some kitchen appliances, such as washing machines or refrigerators.
