Cat Litter Boxes – The Toxoplasma gondii parasite
In the United States, cats are one of the most popular species of pets. They are loved for their charm, playfulness and for their independence. Cats make good outdoor pets and excellent indoor pets. They bring a lonely soul company and affection.
However, there are some serious health risks associated with cats that a cat owner or potential cat owner needs to consider. Cats, as with many animals carry parasites – especially outdoor cats. One particular parasite, called Toxoplasma gondii, can cause someone with a compromised immune system, pregnant women or their unborn child serious health problems. The infection to a human is called Toxoplasmosis.
Toxoplasmosis can be contracted by a variety of sources, but the main one of which is through inadvertently consuming cat feces. This contact with cat feces is typically and most commonly done via the cat litter box. Therefore, use common sense protective measures, like wearing gloves and a face mask when changing the litter box. Another tactic is to change the litter box everyday. The Toxoplasma gondii parasite does not become infections until one to five days after being deposited in the litter box. If you are pregnant, you should avoid the litter box altogether.
